The goal of the project is to add MIPS64 supporting for NetBSD.
Now NetNSD can run on several MIPS32 based platforms, such as evbmips, pmax, sgimips, etc. Many of existing hardware platforms are capable of running 64-bit code, and hardware based on MIPS64 is becoming more and more important than 32 bits based one. But MIPS64 is not supported by NetBSD now.
The NetBSD/mips64 port would be similar to NetBSD/Alpha with 64-bit longs and pointers and 32-bits ints. The first step is to boot up the NetBSD/mips64 kernel. Next more userland porting work will be carried out, such as library and so on. At the first beginning our work is based on simulator - GXemul, because there is not any suitable hardware platform to work on now and debugging is much easier on a simulator.
Check out my wiki of NetBSD where I keep some information about the project.
